If you’re considering trying to make your relationship work long distance once college lets out, it can be done. As someone who never wanted to have a long distance relationship again, her four-year LDR bought her a husband, so believe me when I say long distance relationships can work. It’s not easy so you’ll have to be willing to work to make your relationship last.
Here are 5 tips to make your long distance relationship work once school lets out.
- Make plans to visit. While absence makes the heart grow fonder, every relationship needs some face time to, shall we say, revitalize your relationship, rekindle the flame, keep the love alive.
- Skype. One of the miracles of modern technology allows you to be virtually face to face. The kissing isn’t the same, but hey — that’s why we recommend #1.
- Put your unlimited calling/texting plan to good use. Staying in regular contact is important to nurturing a relationship. If you don’t have a phone plan with unlimited minutes, upgrade. Trust me when I say your bank account will thank you for it (all it takes is one $125 phone bill to make you switch over). Just think, all the money you save can go towards your next plane/train/bus ticket.
- Prioritize the relationship. When life gets busy, you have to make an effort to get on the phone and stay in touch.
- Establish clear boundaries. While hard to imagine, your beau may think it’s perfectly acceptable to make out with someone else, while you disagree. Have that uncomfortable conversation up front to keep your heart intact later on. If you can both agree to a less structured relationship, fine. Just talk about it first before someone gets hurt.
- Be in love. If you’re in love (or in lots of like), it’s easier to justify the time, energy, and money it takes to sustain a long distance relationship. Don’t be afraid to look at your ROI (return on investment) and decide on whether this person is a worthy addition to your investment portfolio. If they’re not, it’s much easier to say sayonara for good.
Ultimately a long distance relationship will reveal quite quickly whether true feelings are actually there.
