Did you know the way you decorate your dorm room can affect your GPA? Recently I read that college students who have beautiful spaces actually score better on exams than those who don’t. Consider having an attractive study space is going to help you stick around and study rather than a space that repels and disgusts you. So with the goal in mind to do better at college, here are five tips to beautify and personalize your dorm room and study space.
Vinyl decals. If you find the blank walls in your dorm room uninspiring and blah, vinyl decals are a great way to bring your personality to your study space. Decals aren’t just for girls, as evidenced by the skateboarder vinyl decal image above.
Fabric wallpaper. Can’t paint your dorm room? No problem. Personalize the walls of your dorm room with fabric wallpaper and starch that you can remove at the end of the school year. Our friends at F Yeah Cool Dorm Rooms walk you through the process here!
Cork board. Having a cork board is a great way to keep everything in one place, including your class schedule, ticket for the upcoming Death Cab for Cutie concert, lucky fortune cookie fortunes, or photos with your new college friends.
Inspiration wall. Instead of spending money on posters, go through magazines and pull out images that inspire you and tape them to your dorm room wall. Or, if you’re into photography, get your pictures printed and post them to your wall. It will give you lots to look at when you find yourself daydreaming while studying.
Mood lighting. Fluorescent lighting is harsh and can cause headaches, depression, and eye strain, among other things. Utilize accent lighting by bringing your own lamps or even lanterns and strands of white lights — why wait for Christmas?
Even if you are living off campus or doing online classes, don’t underestimate the power that your environment can have on your study habits and test scores!
