It’s true what they say: you should never let your personal life interfere with work. However, by that same token, you should never let your work interfere with your personal life. Just like we are expected to leave your personal issues at home, it’s every bit as important to leave work at the job. It’s not always easy, but real success will come when we can balance these two aspects of everyday life without letting one rule the other.
Of course, that doesn’t mean the principles that govern one can’t be applied to the other. In fact, there are many skills that you use to master your job that can also ensure your life stays on a healthy, productive, and enjoyable path.
Time Management
Are you spending too much time at work on unproductive activities or spreading yourself too thin across too many tasks? Are the important tasks at work receiving enough attention? These are questions that must be asked every day in a business, and you should consider them in your personal life as well. Are you crashing on the couch and staring at the TV when you get home? Are you trying too hard to get too many things done before you have to go to work the next day?
Track all of your time for a month and get a big picture of the situation – both at home and on the job. Be ready to make some cuts to your schedule and prioritize your activities. Accept that you may not be able to do everything in one week, and that you may just need some help.
If you are looking to really dig into your time management and improve it a great quiz and guide to go through is The Successful Person’s Guide To Time Management.
Support Structure
A strong business and a happy life require the services of a solid support structure. You can’t do everything alone. At work you need people who have the skills to help you succeed. A Masters of Business Administration may give you a lot of the necessary skills, but one that you should regularly use involves recognizing and delegating to qualified people. At home, you need to surround yourself with people who understand your particular situation, who know when you need attention and when you need to be left alone.
Expansion
It’s easy to get in a rut if you’re not always looking for new opportunities. Your business needs to find beneficial partners, new clients, and more effective employees. There may even come a time when you should consider entering a whole new market. At home, don’t let yourself fall into a routine. Plan something new. Meet the neighbors. Discover new hobbies. There is always something worth learning and experiencing, and it only takes a little time and some dedication to really broaden your horizons.
Budgeting
Nothing causes more frustration and stress than money problems. Cash flow is obviously a huge concern in business and in your personal life, which means you have to budget just as carefully in one as you do the other.
Take care of your debts and make sure you are not spending more than you have incoming. Look for opportunities to invest (in new business opportunities, in a home, etc.), but don’t let that debt get out of control. Make sure your investments can cover you in case of an emergency and your normal sources of income suddenly dry up.
Celebrate Your Success
Whether you have had a personal, family, or business success, always commemorate the experience in some way. You deserve it. Schedule a time to do something special, make sure those people who have supported you are there – maybe even invite someone new – and then, without going over your budget, celebrate your accomplishment so you’ll have reason to do it again.
