Management Accountant

A management accountant is the financial glue which holds an organization together. These individuals are a centralized accountancy system in their own right. If you enjoy working with numbers and creatively solving problems, this may be the position for you.

The Job

Each management accountant will be responsible for similar tasks. In general, these positions are responsible to report to department heads or managerial heads of departments to share their financial findings on a regular basis. Each department is responsible for establishing a budget, implementing the budget, and adhering to the budget. In order to do so effectively, they must receive progress reports. A management accountant will do just that. They will create and distribute accurate reports in a timely fashion. These people will be responsible for creating an accounting system which works best for their organization. They may also be required to improve upon an existing system. Either way, they will always be seeking opportunities to improve upon the system they use. These people work with various team members to create annual budgets in each department and for the organization as a whole. They may be responsible for forecasting, as well.

If you are considering this career path, you must possess a certain skill set to be successful. You must be highly organized, pay attention to details, and be able to meet deadlines. Other people rely heavily upon these positions for reports and forecasts at various times throughout the year. You must be able to communicate well. You will be working with people in all departments. You must be able to speak with people who may not understand technical accounting, including upper management. You must be analytical and good with numbers. You will spend a lot of time analyzing your data and reports to find ways to make improvements throughout the organization. You must also have a solid understanding of business. You will be required to do so much more than simply provide standard accounting services. Without a general knowledge of business, it will be very difficult for you to do well. Also, you must work well under pressure and be diplomatic. Many times, people will pressure you for information because they are under pressure from their direct report. Other times, people will insist you made an error when their numbers do not reflect what they want them to; even though, your numbers are, most likely, correct. You will also be required to have an advanced skill set in computers and accountancy programs. These positions are extremely important and demanding.

The Path

In order to gain this occupation, you must have, at least, a bachelor’s degree from online universities or traditional bricks and mortar universities. Some organizations require their management accountants to be certified public accountants. Most organizations prefer you to have a master’s degree, but at the end of the day, the decision is yours.
