There are currently a wide variety of public relations careers available to college graduates who have obtained at least a bachelor’s degree in communications. What is Public Relations, You Ask?

Public relations has many definitions. It is best defined as, “enhancing and maintaining the image for businesses, non-profit organizations, events or high-profile people such as celebrities and politicians”. Basically, someone who works in public relations is responsible for bragging up and heightening the image of the person or corporation they work for. People with public relations careers manage communication between a corporation or organization and the public.

Currently, there are 275,000 or more public relations jobs in America. Public relations careers can be in many different fields, such as advertising, healthcare and social assistance, educational services, and even government. Other career opportunities can be found in communications firms, financial institutions and government agencies. Career opportunities are far better in bigger cities. This is because press services and other communication facilities are more available. This can, many times, also be because many businesses have headquarters in large cities such as Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and even Washington, D.C. While a public relations career can be very competitive, the job outlook is sky rocketing. The employment rate for public relations is expected to climb an astonishing 24 percent between 2008 and 2018.

If you do obtain a public relations careers, you will be working in an agency or large corporation’s communications department. If you find yourself working for an agency, you will be working for more than one client. However, if you work for a large corporation, you will work solely for them. Sometimes, you won’t even serve the entire corporation, but you will only serve a small division inside of it.
