Marriage and Family Therapy

Marriage and Family Therapy

Considering the fact that more than half of all marriages in the US now end in divorce, there has never been a better time to become a marriage and family therapist. They help individuals, couples and families deal with emotional and behavioral problems. Most of the time therapy consists of a session where clients talk and therapists listen and ask questions and give advice. Marriage and Family therapists work for mental health centers, social service agencies and in private practice. The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy estimates the current average salary of a marriage and family therapist to be $54,936. Therapists typically have a masters degree in counseling or psychology and they can specialize in a specific area such as anger management, stress management, co-dependency, adolescent adjustment or divorce. Courses will teach you the basics of sociology, marital life cycle patterns, conflict resolution and techniques for identifying and changing unhealthy behaviors.
