Carpentry

Carpenters are expert craftsmen who design, construct, install and repair wooden fixtures and structures. The Bureau of Labor reports that carpenters accounted for a staggering 1.5 million jobs in the US in 2006. Carpentry work is a physical vocation with many opportunities to work outside.

Carpentry courses will teach you the basics of cabinetry, mill work, various finishing methods, woodworking, exterior and interior trim styles as well as blueprint reading and mathematical skills. Most carpenters gain experience through an apprenticeship of a few years after completing training.

A fluency in Spanish is valuable in the industry as a large percentage of the work force speaks Spanish. Similar areas of study and careers include plumbing, electricians, architecture, and stonemasonry.
