Early Childhood Special Education

Training and education for early childhood special education
As with most professional careers, it is necessary to get a formal education from one of the many traditional and online colleges that offer early childhood special education degrees. Many schools offer appropriate degrees ranging from the associate’s to the doctoral level. Although an associate’s degree may be sufficient in some areas, it is highly recommended that you get at least a bachelor’s degree, as increasing numbers of schools are requiring one.
During your studies, you can expect to take classes in the assessment of special learning needs, the theory of inclusion, physical, language, and cognitive development and challenges, treatment of emotional disorders, and language development and remediation. Other required studies include teaching children with reading problems, behavioral assessment and interventions, assistive technology, the arts in special education, and social and emotional challenges and development. Many degree programs will also require you to complete an internship before you can graduate.
After you complete your early childhood special education degree program, you must complete your requirements to be licensed in your state. Requirements may vary from one state to the next but typically include a written exam, CPR certification, and a criminal background check.
