Bachelor’s in Special Education
The special education degree at the Bachelors’ level involves various types of minor concentrations you can choose from that will benefit your future career goals. The minor of assessments and evaluations will focus on the administration aspects of special education, such as how to manage classrooms and the special education population of that school. In addition, this concentration will help you to learn how to implement and manage students IEP’s, or individualized educational plans, which are specialized plans specifically for those with diagnosed behavioral or learning disorders. These plans have a set of specific instructions that help the student both academically and socially throughout their educational career. Foundations of special education helps you to better understand the fundamentals of special education, from how to determine if a child needs special education to how to implement the plans as well as which plans work for which children. All kids are different and all have different issues, especially those who have special needs. This program will help you to determine all of the different needs of each child. In addition to your 135 hours of course instruction, you will also be required to have some on the job training as a student teacher in a special education classroom setting.
Master’s in Special Education
Once you have earned your Bachelor’s degree in special education, you can go on to earn your special education degree at the Masters level. This degree takes about two more years of online education through distance learning but it is well worth the time it takes. This special education degree will more than double your income opportunities and opens the door to a number of new and exciting career opportunities. Similar to the Bachelors program, the Master’s degree program also offers numerous concentrations including assessment and management, foundations of special education, instructional design and research. Each of these concentrations offers you an opportunity to gain more knowledge in a specific category of study, giving you more knowledge and more experience in that area as soon as you graduate.
