Education and training at special education schools
You can find great special education schools around the country that offer both traditional and distance education programs. Because of the increased level of skill necessary for these jobs, special education teachers must train longer than regular education teachers. In most states, the minimum requirement is a four-year degree program with at least one extra year of graduate level studies. A special education teacher is responsible for testing students by conducting screenings to determine any disabilities or impairments. These teachers must work closely with other members of the special education team to coordinate services and to develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). They must also work closely with parents and regular classroom teachers to ensure that students are receiving everything they need to make their educational plan a success.
In addition to these duties, special education teachers must also maintain detailed, accurate records of a student’s progress, and regularly communicate this information to other interested parties. As such, excellent written and verbal skills are a necessity.
