Training and education to become a special needs teacher

You can find training programs for a special needs teacher at many of the better traditional and online universities and colleges. These programs offer degrees ranging from the bachelor’s to the doctoral level, depending on your needs. Typically, special needs teachers require more training than regular teachers and, at minimum, must complete a four-year bachelor’s degree program with at least one additional year of graduate studies. Some of these programs require you to pick a specialization but many others offer a general degree in special education across all areas. No matter which program you choose, you can expect your last year to be spent student teaching in a classroom under the supervision of a certified special education teacher as well as a college professor.

Licensure is required for special needs teachers in all states, but the requirements vary from one state to the next. For example, some states require teachers to receive general education k-12 credentials before pursuing a special education certification. Other states allow for a general special education licensure. Although you may find certain states with reciprocity agreements, most states will require you to apply for and receive a new license in each state in which you choose to teach.
