History of Dieting: Today's Diet Fads

2

In an effort to look toned and achieve their ideal body image, people worldwide are constantly dieting. The turn of the century has brought many new diet fads, some effective, others not.

  • The Zone. Called a change in lifestyle rather than a diet, The Zone diet is intended to help people re-set their hormonal balance to keep weight off longterm. It involves eating a balanced percentage of carbs, fats, and proteins at each meal. The Zone is also known to control insulin levels.
  • Vegetarian Diet. While not a new concept, many people have turned to a vegetarian diet to eliminate many harmful hormones found in meats. There are many variations within a vegetarian diet, but what most vegetarians share is the fact that they won’t eat animal based food with the exception of eggs, dairy products, and honey.
  • Vegan Diet. Similar to a vegetarian diet, vegans choose to eat only plan based foods. They do not eat eggs, dairy products, or honey. Vegans may also avoid cosmetics or clothing that are derived from animals.
  • South Beach Diet. The South Beach Diet has 3 phases that help people attain a healthy lifestyle. Phase 1 focuses on eliminating cravings, Phase 2 involves long-term weight-loss, and Phase 3 involves maintaining weight by healthy food choices. Created by a cardiologist and nutritionist, the South Beach diet helps control insulin levels.
  • hCG Diet. The hCG diet helps people to adjust their metabolism and eating habits and lose weight fast. While on the diet, people receive an injection of a hormone produced by pregnant women which encourages weight loss, particularly when combined with a very low calorie diet.

For people who are having a hard time keeping the weight off long term, working with a qualified personal trainer can help them target problem areas and customize a plan for their particular needs. They help people be accountable to their goals to work out and eat well and target progress.
