Nursing: From A-Z, you can find a specialty

Are you caring, sympathetic and love working with people? Are you emotionally stable, able to withstand human trauma, suffering and other medical-related stresses?

NATURE OF THE WORK

From Ambulatory care to Urology, there is something under the umbrella of nursing that could be right for you. Registered nurses (RNs) tasks include everything from recording patients’ medical histories and symptoms, educating patients on various medical conditions, providing support to patients’ family member, operating medical machinery, or administering medications.

RNs can specialize in various areas of patient care, like operating room nurses who assist surgeons, or according to specific health conditions, like diabetes management nurses. Other RNs specialize working with one or more organs or body systems (like dermatology nurses), or with a specific population demographic (like pediatric nurses who work with children).

Some RNs combine specialties. For example, a ‘pediatric oncology‘ nurse deals with children who have cancer.

International Police Officer Uniforms

Women like to joke about the whole “man in uniform” thing but contrary to My Colleges and Careers usual style of reveling in the unimportant but interesting, we are going to take things a little deeper today. What does it mean to wear a uniform? Is there a certain power that comes with it? In a recent study participants were asked to rank 25 occupational uniforms by the feeling they elicited. Police uniforms consistently symbolized a feeling of safety to participants.

Interesting Facts about Police Uniforms (policeone.com)

In 1969, the police in Menlo Park, California dispensed with their traditional navy blue, paramilitary-style uniforms and adopted a nontraditional uniform in hopes of improving police community relations. The new, nontraditional uniform consisted of a forest green sport coat blazer worn over black slacks, a white shirt, and a black tie. The officer”s badge was displayed on the blazer and the officer”s weapons were concealed under the coat. Once word spread about Menlo Park’s attempts, over 400 other police department in the United States also experimented with a blazer style uniform. In 1977, after wearing the blazer style uniform for 8 years, the Menlo Park Police Department realized that the sport coat uniform did not command respect and returned to a traditional, paramilitary-style uniform.

Criminal Justice Careers: Are Cop Stereotypes True?

Cops. You either love ‘em or you hate ‘em. But has society painted them with too broad of a brush? Are all New York City cops tough-talking and all tiny town cops patriarchal heroes?A recent study by Springfield College decided it was time to put all the stereotypes to rest.

HiRes

They surveyed 830 randomly selected cops using The Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire Scale to get to the bottom of things.

  • The majority of those surveyed categorized themselves as a “Typical Cop” with qualities like self-discipline, social boldness, extroverted and emotionally tough.
  • Traffic officers and deputies shared many characteristics such as high energy, dominance, independence, spontaneity, socially flexible and free from anxiety-related behaviors.
  • Previous research has used the MMPI as a test to determine psychological characteristics of police officers, and it was suggested that the MMPI was the most commonly used psychological test of law enforcement officials and that research on psychological assessment of police officers is so mixed that it may even be questionable to advance generalizations about possible discriminating characteristics.
  • A similar study found a wide variety of behaviors between police officers from different departments. The interpersonal skills of community college law enforcement officials were rated higher than major university and inner-city police officers.
  • Police officers as a group tend be more homogenous than other career groups. They tend to be cheerful and outgoing with a strong interest in practical matters.
  • Female participants were also found to be more likely to present a good impression of themselves, to be less depressed, to be more psychologically mature, more assertive and more aware of the needs of others as compared to the normative population data.

Does this list sound like a comprehensive rundown of you or someone you know? It may be time for a Criminal Justice career!

My Colleges and Careers Professional Interview: Eric Armstrong

It’s time for another young urban professional interview. Today’s subject is the illustrious Eric Armstrong. Eric grew up in Pennsylvania, survived Brigham Young University and now he hangs his hat in California. A man without a coast you could say. He received a degree in animation from BYU and is now working as a freelance motion designer for local animation studios and businesses. We caught up with him to get the scoop on careers in animation and design.

My Colleges and Careers: We know you are way too cool for a formality like a job title, but if you had to paint yourself into a corner like that what would yours be?

Motion Design Consultant

My Colleges and Careers: What projects have you worked on?

I’ve worked on projects with Sprite, CISCO, Coke, FLO TV, various bands, and a couple of other super sicky dope clients that I’m not legally allowed to even talk about it.

My Colleges and Careers: What is different about your career than you expected?

Considering the economic times, it’s a little more cut-throat than I thought it would be. People with fifteen years professional experience are floating around in the freelance market because they’ve lost their jobs and I’ve got to compete with them coming right out of college.

Eric

My Colleges and Careers: Do you feel like you were prepared when you left college?

Yes and no. Yes: the computer animation program is set up to teach you how to recognize a problem and solve it - there are far too too too many things to learn to enter the industry by only mimicking what a teacher shows you. (side note: to all the people that mimic andrew kramer’s tutorials - you’re not fooling any potential employers.) No: BYU failed to mention that everyone is going to try and screw you over… hard.

My Colleges and Careers: What do you love about your job?

Making things look sexy.

What do you hate about your job?

I dislike not knowing if I’m going to have work after I finish my short term contracts. It’s scary.

My Colleges and Careers: Do you have to do continuing education in your job? Is it important you keep up with the industry? How and Why?

I am always trying to learn something new. I have a lot of very complicated computer programs that I work with and there is always something new to learn about them or some new shortcut to getting to the same end that will save you hours. It’s not about working really hard. It’s about working really smart. Art and culture are constantly evolving - the idea is to not keep up, but to lead. Because if I don’t do it, someone else will. I’m expendable and I never forget that.

My Colleges and Careers: How would you like your career to advance over the next 20 years?

I want to run my own studio / record label and with the cash money I want to own a hotel somewhere tropical. Dream big. Work hard.

My Colleges and Careers: What types of personalities do the best in your field? What types of people should not go into your industry?

Selfish people aren’t invited. You’re gonna get told what to do a lot so if you’ve got an ego - check it at the door. Come hungry and come to work.

Desktop3

Do you know how to work that wool peacoat or would rather year round t-shirt weather? Are you more Beach Boys or Velvet Underground?

East debate, starting with major selection. Have you ever wondered what types of majors are most popular on the east and west coasts? So did we and with that burning question we got up to our elbows in researching popular majors of over 30 universities and colleges from both sides of the divide.

Where a crack is not whack: The Life of a Chiropractor

THE CHIROPRACTIC APPROACH TO HEALTHCARE

Chiropractors treat problems related to the musculoskeletal system and believe this improves the nervous system and general health, all without drugs or surgery.

Like other health practitioners, chiropractors follow a standard routine to get information needed to diagnose and treat patients. They take the patient’s medical history; conduct physical, neurological, and orthopedic examinations; and may order laboratory tests like X rays.

In addition to general chiropractic practice, some chiropractors specialize in sports injuries, neurology, orthopedics, pediatrics, and/or nutrition.
