Senior graphic designers are those who are in charge of improving set designs, and supervising those graphic designers who work under them. These senior graphic designers must have the proper qualifications, including a combination of education and on the job experience. With this experience, and education, also come a higher salary. Since this is a senior position, freelance graphic designers cannot enjoy the benefit of becoming a senior graphic designer, unless they pursue a career within a company.

Education and Experience

In order to be qualified for the title of senior graphic designer, you must first go back to college to earn at least a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, although a master’s degree will give you the edge you need to be successful in this top career. Many top online universities offer students the option of earning their master’s degree in graphic design, which can be completed through distance learning in about 1 ½ to 2 years. In addition to education, the senior graphic designer must also have about five years on the job experience as a junior, or-mid level graphic designer, before they can become qualified for the senior title. Many corporations hire graphic designers at all skill levels. However, the title of senior brings with it many more possibilities, making the higher education and job experience well worth the time.

Job Description

The senior graphic designer is in charge of supervising all the graphic designers that are under them. This can include assisting them with various designs, providing feedback on their designs and requiring them to do various types of revisions on their designs. In addition, the senior designer also provides revisions to set corporate designs and advertising campaigns. The senior graphic designer also works more with various clients than those at the junior and mid-levels, since most of the work is supervised by the senior designer. In these cases, the senior designer will inspect the work done by the other graphic designers before submitting it to their client. Once the project is submitted to the client, they will take the project back to the original designer for any revisions. They will also work directly with upper management to brainstorm for various ideas that make the corporate logos more effective. This is a highly competitive position, where only the top graphic designers achieve senior status. However once you become a senior graphic designer, you can expect your salary to be around $100,000 per year.
