Teachers Aid
If you have the drive and desire you can start a new career by working as a teachers aid. I know it sounds like you’ll be in the classroom helping to grade papers and sharpen pencils. But it’s far more encompassing than that. Assisting teachers means helping to complete secretarial and instructional tasks, as well as doing some tutoring and preparing lessons. The scope of a teachers aid is very broad indeed. They may help set up equipment, record grades, take students on field trips, police the hallways, load buses, perform cafeteria duties, or be a playground attendant. The list goes on. These duties are all useful for helping aids to achieve their overall goals of beginning a whole new career.
Requirements and Experience
In order to become a teachers aid an applicant has to have at least their high school diploma. The standards will vary from one state to another, and from school district to school district. It even pays to have a little bit of college education these days. Many who take this on can complete their associate degree programs from various community and two year colleges. But it’s the OJT (On the Job training) that prepares them best. They need to possess good communication and writing skills. They can gain a lot of experience with working and helping students from various cultures and backgrounds. Most of them will learn another language, and bilingual aids are in demand more and more, especially if they speak Spanish.
A High Demand Position
The employment expectations for a teachers aid has been good and steady, with growth expected to increase. This is because of the increase in students who need the skills and help that these aids can give, and the added help they bring. They are called upon to help with those that have special needs, and have to possess the skills for giving that special kind of attention that is much needed by those with special needs. Having these skills can open many opportunities, and chances for a whole new career. The increase in demand for these teachers aids is largely due to the emphasis on accountability and educational quality brought on by the ‘No Child Left Behind’ Act. Teachers really do need more help from more aids in order to prepare their students to pass their tests. There are Summer school programs, and after-school programs, that are also available for new aids. Many aids will leave this field and move on to other forms of employment, shift careers, or take on family duties at home. This is another reason that this field will always have a demand for new aids.
In today’s economy many people have been forced to look for other job opportunities, finding their old jobs are no longer there. Lots of people thought they were set to work until retirement right where they were, but many people have been left to start over, to go back to school, and to begin new careers. Becoming a teachers aid just might be the career move you need to turn your life around. It’s a great opportunity to educate yourself, to help others, and to begin a whole new career.
