As the person who administers anesthetics and sedation drugs during medical procedures, anesthesiologists play an important role in the hospital environment. Other tasks include monitoring patients, providing life support, keeping records, assisting patients, and working with other medical professionals to help a patient throughout their hospital stay.

Anesthesiologists need a working knowledge of medicine, biology, dentistry, chemistry, math, psychology, physics, administration, and management. Most people who do well in this career have a master’s degree, Ph.D., or M.D.

Anesthesiologists work with arterial line catheters, cardiac monitoring units, stethoscopes, tourniquets, and gas anesthesia apparatuses. Successful anesthesiologists are usual good reasoners and managers. People with this job have direct contact with people, work in a hospital or other medical setting, and work hard to make a patient’s visits as good as possible.
