As in many healthcare fields, each state licenses dental or oral hygienists to its own set of authorizations and restrictions. Accreditation of hygienists, however, is national, compliments of the Commission on Dental Accreditation or CODA that certifies programs and courses within the field. Course Accreditation
One of the most important requirements you should place on any of the dental hygienist courses you consider is that of CODA accreditation. CODA stands for Commission on Dental Accreditation, the organization recognized by the Department of Education that is responsible for determining minimum education standards and standardization of education, regardless of geography or educational institution type. A community college offering related courses must pass the same accreditation standards as the largest, most prestigious university in the country. CODA approval is so crucial that many states, at which licensing is granted, will not issue licenses to graduates of non-accredited programs.
