People who are good decision makers, critical thinkers, negotiators, managers, and communicators may be perfect candidates for becoming chief executives. They help instigate policies and plan, coordinate, and direct nearly every aspect of an organization.

Possible titles of people with this career include chief executive officer (CEO), chief operating officer (COO), chief financial officer (CFO), vice president, president, finance vice president, operations vice president, or general manager.

The chief executive officer of an organization works closely with board members, staff, officials, suppliers, other businesses, and state and federal agencies. They coordinate business operations, analyze operations, review reports from staff, and hire managers.

Successful chief executives usually have a master’s degree and possibly a Ph.D., M.D., or J.D. This education will establish a wide knowledge base in administration, management, law, government, economics, marketing, sales, accounting, math, public safety, and human resources.
