Educational Administrators at the post secondary level, most commonly colleges and universities, are responsible for overseeing the academic processes of higher education, from faculty to enrollment to curriculum.
There a wide variety of administrators at the post secondary level. Chief Academic Officers select faculty and tenure decisions, make budgets, and oversee academic policies and programs. Deans of Faculty coordinate the efforts of different departments. Department Heads supervise the faculty and classes of a particular academic discipline. Directors of Development are responsible for raising funds for the institution. Deans of Students organize and supervise essential programs for students such as career services, counseling, housing, financial aid, and health services. Registrars are responsible for student records including transcripts, grades, and assess tuition fees, they also create class catalogs and track enrollment data. Directors of Admissions are responsible for the admissions process. Financial Aid Directors oversee financial aid and scholarship programs. Athletic Directors are responsible for intramural and intercollegiate athletics.
For most educational administrators in higher education, a master’s degree is a requirement and many begin as professors. A PhD is recommended for the highest positions in educational administration. Be sure to look into the programs being offered in many locations.
