Farmers and Ranchers

Farmers and Ranchers own or rent agricultural establishments and manage the daily operations, supervise employees, and sell the products of that establishment. Most are family owned and operated, some are part of large corporate run farms.

Farmers and Ranchers are responsible for every aspect of the farm. Planting and harvesting, maintaining fencing, purchasing equipment and maintaining and operation of the equipment. Some Farmers and Ranchers will hire laborers, and are responsible for their supervision.

Farmers and Ranchers work long hours, often from sunrise to sunset. The majority of their work is outdoors and is required year-round in many different weather conditions.

Most Farmers and Ranchers grow up on farms and ranches learning the necessary skills. However, the increasing complexity of the agriculture industry means that even those who grow up on farms and ranches are encouraged to obtain an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. Be sure to look into the degrees being offered in many locations.
