Medical Billing and Coding Training
Medical billing and coding training can be completed either in a classroom setting or online, depending on your personal needs. You may choose to earn either a certificate or Associates Degree with your medical billing and coding training, depending on how much time you wish to dedicate to your studies and begin your career. Medical billing training is slightly different than medical coding training; although you can also choose to do both if you wish to broaden your employment options when your schooling is completed. Before you begin a training program in either medical billing or medical coding, ensure that the school is accredited and will provide you with not only the classes you need to take but the experience that will help you to jump start your career as well. Most Associate programs and select certificate programs offer opportunities for internships which will give you extra hands on training.
Certificate Program
Medical billing and coding training can be completed in 9-12 short months if you choose to go with the certificate program. In this program, you will be well prepared for either certification exam you wish to take. For example, if you choose to go through medical billing training, you will be able to take the medical billing exam; while if you choose the medical coding training, you will be prepared for the coding exam. If you choose to go through both medical billing and coding training, you may also choose to take both exams. In either case, you will need to take classes related to anatomy and physiology as well as keyboarding and various billing and coding classes to learn the proper billing and coding software.
Associate’s Degree
With the Associate’s Degree; you may once again choose medical billing and coding training. This degree takes approximately 2 years to complete and will help you to gain employment easily since you will finish with 2 years of college behind you. In this program, you will take more science and medical courses than the certificate program in addition to the basic education courses like English and Math. In addition to the courses you take through an Associates program, you will also have opportunities depending on your school, to do internships at local hospitals or doctor’s offices to gain more hands on training before beginning your career. This extra experience will help you to obtain employment as soon as your training is over.
In either venue you wish to study; online or in classroom, you will be required to take the same courses which are worth the same credit hours. The advantage to online training is that you can work at your own pace; working around your full-time job or family obligations. If you are the type of student however, who needs the structure of a classroom and cannot dedicate yourself to getting your work done without supervision, then a classroom setting would be the right choice for you. In either scenario, it is up to your own personal needs that should determine what type of medical billing and coding training you receive.
