A recent study done by Michigan State University revealed that the leading cause for students to dropout of college is depression. Student depression has been on the rise lately and it is no surprise with all the stresses college students are dealing with. While some cases of depression are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain and cannot be prevented, recent studies have confirmed that certain types of depression can be prevented by implementing a few healthy habits. Here are some of the best way to beat the college blues:
1. Eat a healthy Diet. If your body is being fueled properly with fresh fruits and veggies, complex carbohydrates, and lean protein your mood will automatically improve. In addition, try taking a multi-vitamin. Vitamin B and Vitamin D are nutrients that are essential to maintaining a good mood.
2. Get Pleanty of Sleep. When you’re tired it’s hard to see a lot of things clearly. Make sure that your thinking isn’t clouded by too many late study sessions or nights out on the town. A full 8 hours will help give you the energy and the mood boost that you need in addition to several other benefits. Here are a few more benefits of getting a good night’s sleep.
3. Get your Blood Pumping. We’ve all heard that exercise is important for our physical health but the emotional benefits are just as essential. Exercising will release endorphins giving you an all-over feeling of well-being. Exercise doesn’t have to be boring either. Try out a new zumba class at the recreation center, play a game of basketball with the guys, or go out dancing with some friends.
4. Don’t overwhelm yourself. If you’re finding you’ve taken on too many classes or extra activities see which ones you can cut out. It will be hard to relax when you’re constantly running from place to place and stressing over tests and assignments. If you’re feeling overwhelmed take fewer classes next semester or drop some of your other activities.
5. Take time for Yourself. Don’t forget to have fun. College isn’t all just about getting a degree. Now is a great time to make friends, socialize, and get out there and have a good time. Make an effort to get out of the library or your dorm room more often. Attend on campus events. Go out with your friends. Call an old friend from high school just to chat or catch up on a favorite TV series.
