Getting Better at Job Interviews
After competing for a job interview there are some essential tasks you need to undertake. I’d recommend communicating with your potential employer - thanking them for considering you. Moreover, it’s so easy to forget all about the interview, so write down everything while its fresh in your head.
You may or may not be inclined to write a thank you letter, tons of people don’t! Do consider writing notes though - the value of keeping a note of what was said during the Interview is so valuable.
Jotting down notes after your interview works in a couple of ways. Notes from the Interview could help:
- Remind you of the specific information brought up during the interview (This can help with the thank you note too!).
- Remind you of what was actually discussed during your interview, remember you might well have a second interview to prepare for, they made notes and may talk about the things you mentioned.
- If like many job searchers you have gone for a couple of jobs - you can compare and analyze your notes from each job interview and maybe work out any kind of reoccurring theme if you have difficulty actually getting a job.
Never wait around to write down your notes - get outside of the building and sit down somewhere, you would be surprised the difference in what you remembered immediately after to leaving it even a couple of hours.Make a mental note of all the questions that were put to you, write as many down as you can remember, from this you should attempt to jot down the responses you gave as accurately as possible, any notes about how you felt and how well you answered each and every question should also be noted down, concentrate especially on those you had difficulty with - these are the ones you want to work on. If there was anything you think or feel was not brought out of the interview - write it down, during a second interview or your letter of thanks you can raise this with them.
Any worries and concerns you had in your interview, whether that be physical discomfort, nervousness, lack of preparation or anything - make a contingency plan to overcome this for the next interview. Make any improvements you can and be sure to credit yourself where credit is due, try not to concentrate on what you feel was negative - hey you did ok, might get the job and if you don’t its all practice!
As tempting as it is to just forget all about your interview and chill immediately after the whole process - such a stressful event. Endeavour, the notes which you’ve taken after the job will no doubt be of use when one finds themselves stuck in the interview phase of job hunting.
Having been through the entire process on many occasions, on both sides as an observer and an interviewee I can whole heartedly recommend this process as one that will help you to be more successful and get the right job - the one you actually want and deserve, learn from your mistakes and you will be successful - Good Luck!
