Steps to Becoming a Special Education Teacher

You’ve decided you want to change your life. You want to do something meaningful and make a difference in the lives of others. Choosing to pursue a career in special education is a noble choice and not one to be made lightly. Here are 5 steps you should follow to start your careers as a special education teacher.

Make sure you are right for the job. Being a special education teacher takes certain qualities that not all humans come equipped with. As such you will encounter students with learning disabilities that range from mild to severe, physical disabilities, mental disabilities, and emotional issues. To work with these individuals it will be important that you are organized, methodical, patient and resilient.

Make sure the job is right for you. Look at the career as a whole and make sure it is something that you want. You’ll be working mostly days in a classroom environment. You’ll work closely with other teachers and students and won’t have a lot of alone time. Check with schools in the area to see if there is a high demand for teachers. Make sure that the salary of a special education teacher is one that you would be happy with and could make do on.

Research Educational Requirements. All states require that special education teachers be licensed. This typically involves a bachelor’s degree and is some states may require a master’s degree. Teachers must also pass any tests required by their state to become “Highly Qualified” according to the No Child Left Behind Act. Many Colleges and Universities offer education programs with coursework specifically designed for those who wish to work with individuals with special needs. If you do not currently meet the educational requirements needed for your state you will have to go back to college.

Find and attend an accredited university. Make sure that the university you attend to meet the educational requirements is accredited. Get that dream job! Once you’ve reached all the educational requirements for your state you should have no trouble finding a job. Special education teachers are in high demand and jobs are expected to grow over 17 percent over the next 10 years according the the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Being a special education teacher is a very noble and rewarding career. You’ll be making a difference in the lives of people every day and helping others to succeed. You will no doubt be an asset to your school and to society.
