Post Interview Thank You Notes

“It may seem old fashioned to write a thank you note, but the warm emotions you’ll create are never out of style.” -Judy Taylor

After a job interview it is important to send a thank you note. While the note may not make a difference in the hiring decision, there is a chance that it might. This is particularly the case when the choice has been narrowed down to two highly qualified candidates. Since thank you notes are not as commonplace as they used to be, sending one could help to separate you from the stack of qualified job candidates. Not only should you send a note to put your best foot forward, but because it is polite, plain and simple. Here are a few tips to help you write the best post-interview thank you note.

  • Be sure to address the person who interviewed you by name. “To Whom it May Concern” or “Hiring Committee” just isn’t going to fly this late in the game.
  • The note should be simple and brief. Thank the interviewer for their time and consideration. End the note by saying that you look forward to any opportunities to work for the company.
  • Now is not the time to list your qualifications again. You should have accomplished this in both your interview and your resume. You don’t want to seem desperate, just polite.
  • If in the interview, you got the notion that the decision would be made very shortly, it is alright to send a follow up email. Make the email professional. Don’t allow anything to detract from your actual words. Avoid all emoticons, cutesy fonts or images. Simply thank them and move on.
  • If the note is mailed, the card should be simple and the writing clear and easy to read. It is perfectly acceptable to type out a thank you note onto stationary and sign it at the bottom if your handwriting leaves something to be desired.

While most interviewers will tell you that a thank you note doesn’t matter, you never know if it does matter to the person that interviewed you. Don’t let this small detail slip through the cracks. Go get your dream job!
