What to Wear to a Job Interview

Since first impressions are made in the blink of an eye, what you wear to a job interview becomes of paramount importance. Of course hiring decisions aren’t based solely off of what you wear, but how you present yourself and prepare for the interview process itself. But if you show a lack of attention to detail in your professional dress, your interviewer may associate that to a lack of attention to detail in your work ethic. To be on your A game, here are tips on what to wear to a job interview.

A suit. Just because all the stock photos show professionals wearing a black suit and starched white collared shirt, don’t assume this is how you have to dress as well. Instead of the traditional black, you can find core suit pieces in charcoal, gray, navy, burgundy, or even hunter green, depending on your preferences and personal coloring.

Just think — if everyone else shows up at a job interview wearing the standard black suit, white shirt and tie, and you arrive wearing a gray suit with a blue shirt and matching tie, you’ll stand out from the rest.

Dress shirts and blouses. Wearing a collared shirt will frame your face and lift attention for improved communication. If you work in a more relaxed work environment that doesn’t require you to wear a suit jacket or sport coat, a collared shirt or blouse will maintain a polished professional look. Break out of the white dress shirt mold — try different colored shirts like blue or gray, and experiment with patterns like stripes and plaids. It will add more visual interest and help you be more distinctive.

Ties. In a survey conducted among male professionals, the tie was perceived as most professional. Ties also have a slimming effect, drawing eyes into the middle, and it acts as a focal point in an outfit, giving the eye somewhere to rest.

Shell shirts. For women who feel overdressed wearing a collared shirt underneath a blazer, opt for a shell or tank top instead. These rounded necklines have a softer effect on the outfit and be more approachable, while maintaining professionalism and authority with the jacket layer.

Quality Shoes. Don’t underestimate the importance of attention to detail! Make sure your shoes don’t have scuff marks or a worn sole. Jennifer Armitstead shares a story about a man who was being considered for a coveted job and when it came down to him and the other guy, they went with the other guy because this fellow hadn’t paid attention to the condition of his shoes. Invest in new shoes, or at least the time to give your shoes a good spit and polish.

Ladies, opt for a simple pump in a neutral color.
