Enough is enough! Recently I’ve had more candidates cost themselves jobs during phone screens than I care to mention. Why are clients phone screening? The job market is inundated with candidates. And candidates are getting smarter. If your resume looks like a perfect fit you will most likely get an interview, right? Wrong!
Everyone in the world is customizing their resume to seem a perfect fit for job openings. Some are truthful about their backgrounds, many are not. When HR Recruiters and Hiring Managers interview falsies they realize it was a complete waste of their time. Hence the Phone Screen!
So how does a phone screen get you an interview? Simple.
- We just lost a candidate because the client feedback from the Phone Screen was “lacking energy”. People want workers that will work, are enthusiastic, have new ideas and are ambitious. Unfortunately, without being able to see your body language, your voice has to say it all in a Phone Screen. Wake up well before your phone screen, exercise, eat something, put a suit on, and behave just like you would in an interview.
- Know the job description verbatim. And talk about your accomplishments — “tell short stories” that could be a solution to the HR Recruiter or Hiring Manager’s needs yesterday. - Know the company. Who wants you to work for them if you really have no interest in or are excited about what the company does?
