Michael Buble and I come from the same hometown and even back home, he’s a pretty big deal. So when I saw this video of Michael Buble on Facebook I thought I’d check it out. To set the stage, Buble is in concert when he gets heckled by a mom to have her 15-year-old son come sing with him onstage. At first he looks a little hesitant but he says “what the hell” and invites the kid up. You’ve got to watch the video to see what happens next.
I have so much more respect for Michael Buble after watching this clip! Buble’s reaction when he hears the kid perform is absolutely priceless. He could have been intimidated by 15-year-old Sam for stealing the show, but instead he championed him — applauded him for his skill, encouraged him along, and shared the spotlight willingly.
THIS is leadership and mentorship at its finest. When we can see the best in other people, praise them for their efforts, and give them opportunities to shine.
We all come in contact with people everyday who are up-and-coming stars — much like Sam — who we have an opportunity to champion and encourage along the path. Instead of becoming intimidated or defensive, as is completely natural, may we be inspired by Michael Buble and instead respond with delight and encouragement and provide a bit of leadership and mentorship to help them on their way.
