What every job hunter hopes for is to land the ideal job opportunity or career opportunity; the definition of opportunity being “in a good position, chance, or prospect, as for advancement or success.
So why, it seems, are certain people more prone to having opportunities come their way and in closing the deal? To me the answer is obvious and simple, they work hard at it.
Here are a few things people who attract opportunities and cash in on them have in common.
1: They do their homework in terms of determining what constitutes a real opportunity and what a pipe-dream is, and then they deploy their resources accordingly.
2: They research companies and jobs that are know to provide opportunities rather than mere paychecks and stay focused rather than casting a wide net that is usually full of bottom feeding positions that waste their time pursuing because they usually appear better than they actually are.
3: They, on their own or with a career coach, plot out their career ahead of time and know the time when they will reach the point of diminishing returns in their current job. Also, they know when their value is at its high point and when it is most opportune time for them to move on. Most critical, they are proactive and don’t wait for unknown events to dictate when to make a strategic move.
4: Before they create an action plan they first determine what the employer is looking for and only then do they create an elevator speech, resume and interview presentation that is catered specifically for the opportunities they desire.
5: We all know the saying “Opportunity Knocks,” well this is quite true; the caveat is that it usually knocks for people who are in the right place at the right time. As has been said countless times this is why you allot 40%-60% of your job search efforts to networking.
The more people who know you exist, what you have to offer, and what you are looking for in a job or career the better your chance is that opportunity will find you.
6: Finally, one thing I found about those who seem to have a lucky charm when it comes to landing the right business opportunities at the right time is they do not make important decisions alone. They are surrounded by a group of paid and unpaid advisors, people who can speak with them openly and honesty and offer them sound advice.
