Account Manager Job Description
An account manager job description is highly varied based on the type of organization for which you are working. If you are working for an advertising company, your roles and responsibilities may be slightly varied from someone working as a corporate account manager. In general, your overall objective is to ensure your top clients are happy.
The Responsibilities
While this may seem like a luxurious position, it is far from easy. Your organization may have the best product in the business; however, you must prove time and time again as to why a client wants to spend millions of their precious dollars working with your company. In essence, why do they want to spend millions of dollars to work with you? The account manager job description may not say this in the job postings; however, this is the reality of the position. You must have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. You will be working with people at high levels in the client’s organization, as well as executives in your own.
You are the liaison between the client and your organization. You represent your company to the client and you represent the client to your company. It is often a sensitive balance to manage. You will have the client asking for discounts, incentives, and expecting you to prove your allegiance to them at all times. You will also have your company expecting to give as little as possible to make the client happy to keep the bottom line as plush as possible. You must be able to read people well, know when to push, and know when to pull back. It is a stressful position. You may never make everyone happy, so you must be able to accept people being upset with you and your decisions, as well.
The Requirements
Many people choose online degrees in either business administration or communication. If you hold a degree in another area, taking online courses is a great way to complete your education preparation for one of these top careers. You will also be required to accept accounts given to you. It is not often a choice. While accounts are often matched with people’s assets, abilities, and background, you may be given a less-than-desirable account. You must be able to provide your best to any and all accounts provided to you, regardless of your personal feelings.
You will be required to work closely with other team members in your organization. You will work with the sales staff, product development team, marketing individuals, and executives. You will be required to negotiate new sales contracts in many cases and provide sales support. You might be required to create sales growth plans for your client, as well as administer and adhere to budgets. Being a team player is incredibly important and an account manager job description will reflect as such.
An account manager job description is only a guideline to the roles, responsibilities, and requirements of the position. You will spend many hours away from the office and your home; however, some of the opportunities and experiences will be unlike any you might find in any other profession. It is a growing field seeking new top talent.
