Responsibilities of a Bookkeeper

A bookkeeper is in charge of recording a business’s transactions, such as costs, expenses and revenues and posting them in the appropriate ledger. There are multiple ledgers, such as a general ledger, a customer ledger, a suppliers ledger and daybooks. You should also be capable of preparing income statements, balance sheets, fraud prevention, basic payroll procedures, including wages and taxes, correcting accounting errors, merchandise inventory, and adjusting entries.
Bookkeeper Certification
To earn your bookkeeper certification, you will need to continue your education. This means completing a bookkeeping program that is offered either by a community college or a vocational school. You will take courses focusing on subjects such as financial accounting, introductory auditing, principles of management and human resources management. You can work in a number of different places as a bookkeeper, such as government agencies, educational institutions, restaurants and even hotels. Once you complete your program, you will be eligible to receive your bookkeeper certification through the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers, which will require you to have two years of experience and you will need to pass a four part examination.
