Forensic psychologists have an interesting and unique job. They often act as special witnesses in the court room to help juries make decisions, analyze peoples’ mental capacity, and work with victims.
People with a forensic psychologist career serve many purposes in the law enforcement and legal worlds, and their areas of expertise can be just as varied. There are so many exciting opportunities with forensic psychologist jobs.
Forensic Psychologists on Television
Most people are familiar with the forensic psychologists on television shows like “Law and Order” and “Bones.” While the characters in these shows often have idealistic careers, there are aspects of their jobs that are true to life.
One of the best television examples of a forensic psychologist is Dr. Cal Lightman from “Lie to Me.” Using his deep knowledge and understanding of psychology along with his outstanding body language reading skills, Lightman and his team effectively get into the minds of criminals and victims to help solve crimes.
While some of Lie to Me’s plots may be a little extreme, psychology body language are very real sciences. Forensic psychologists work with suspects and criminals to help police solve crimes and to profile potential criminals.
Dr. Lance Sweets, from the popular series “Bones” is a psychologist who works with two of the show’s other characters. Although he does not specialize in forensics, Sweets does work as a psychologist in the criminal justice world, which is a very real situation.
Some forensic scientists work to profile criminals to help protect communities. George Huang in “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” helps police at crime scenes and with suspects as he psychoanalyzes them.
Real-Life Forensic Psychologist Jobs
Although these forensic psychologists’ careers have been glamorized by television, some of what they do lines up with what real-life forensic psychologists do. This career is an exciting way to be involved in the criminal justice, legal, and psychology fields.
