People who have an eye for design, are artists at heart, and have a knack for putting ideas into drawings are probably commercial and industrial designers in the making.
People with this career not only do research on design styles and concepts, but actually get to put them into practice. Commercial and industrial designers are the people behind the design of cars, appliances, toys, furniture, and other products.
They use computer and art tools to create drawings, sketches, artwork, illustrations, and blueprints and then coordinate with others to create models of the product. Commercial and industrial designers then present their work to customers and design committees so the design can be approved or revised as needed.
These designers work with clients to modify designs and cooperate with engineering, production, sales, and marketing departments. Analyzing designs and making sure they are conceivable, based on safety, function, appearance, budget and other factors is also a facet of this job.
Sometimes commercial and industrial designers also create things to use for decoration, advertising, illustration, and packaging purposes.
Most commercial and industrial designers work for a manufacturing company or design firm and some even even choose to do freelance work. Sometimes they travel to testing sites, clients’ homes or offices, design centers, or manufacturing plants.
Commercial and industrial designers use computers, laptops, LCD projectors, and media drives on a daily basis. They also use lots of software for desktop publishing, imaging, graphics, video making and editing, and computer aided design.
Students interested in this career will need a bachelor’s degree. An educational program will include math, engineering, technology, design, production, administration, management, computers, electronics, and mechanics courses. Job opportunities for commercial and industrial designers are expected to increase.
