Craft Artists

Do you spend all your free time painting, gluing and sanding wood to create artwork? Is your favorite store the craft and hobby place? Then you would love a career as a craft artist.

Craft artists have the fun job of creating art pieces like welding, weaving, needlecraft and pottery to sell. People in this career are sometimes known as designers, furniture makers, glass artists and blowers, cordwainers, ceramic artists and sculptors, bronze sculptors and even custom shoe-makers.

As a craft artist you will create art using hand tools, machinery, paint, wood, needles, paper and an endless array of craft supplies and then sell your masterpieces at craft shows.

You will do everything from planning, conceptualizing and deciding on specifications to producing patterns and models and making decisions about what kinds of art mediums to use. Your artwork will be used to decorate homes and offices and may even have practical applications.

People who make it big as craft artists are usually very creative, good with their hands and fingers, good at choosing appropriate equipment and good at managing resources. They also have excellent critical thinking, learning, quality control and decision making skills.

Job opportunities for craft artists are expected to increase. The average hourly wage for people with this job is about $13 and the average annual income is about $29,000. Look into the programs being offered in many locations.
