Mass Communication Jobs
Mass communication is a broad term for anything that has something to do with radio, television or print media. This can be anything from the newspaper journalist to a television producer or a marketing executive. All of these mass communication jobs are part of the broad term, although they are their own entity. When considering going back to school to earn any type of degree, mass communications is always a growing field that can have endless earning potential as well as steady ongoing work, even during recessions or any other type of economical downfall. All of the available mass communication jobs do require some form of degree for employment, if you possess a Bachelor’s degree, you will be rewarded with a career that has a decent starting salary in an exciting field. If you hold a Master’s degree, you will have the ability to earn a substantially higher starting salary as well as many more career options.
Journalist
Journalism is one of the most popular mass communication jobs. A journalist does not work just for newspapers or magazines; they can also work for various television programs as well or move up to the position of editor. The entry level journalist can expect a starting wage of around $30,000 per year depending on the location and company. The mass communication jobs like that of the journalist can be very diverse; for instance, they can report on news for a newspaper or magazine, write a column for their publication or they can write for a television news program which is read on the air by the news anchors. Once the journalist has about 5-10 years of experience and, in some cases, has earned their online Master’s degree, they may have the opportunity to move up to the position of editor, which is the position that oversees all of the employees of the publication. In addition, the editor is also the person who determines what goes into the publication and if the content the journalists have wrote need revisions or is ready to go into print. When an editor is in television, they are called a producer; this position has basically the same duties as the print editor but in a television format. Both of these positions generally have a starting salary of around $40,000 per year. However, it is optimistic to say that the salary can jump up to around $70,000 in some markets.
Senior Marketing Executive
Another one of the vast mass communication jobs is that of the senior marketing executive. This executive is in charge of either a portion of an advertising firm or the advertising department of a company. Like any other of the top careers, you must work your way up to become a senior marketing executive; first you must get your Bachelor’s degree in mass communications with a concentration in advertising. Then, you need to land an entry level position at one of the many advertising firms; while in this position you will be building your experience which will help you to land a higher paid position. During this time, if you go back to school to get your online Master’s degree, you may move up quicker into the exciting position of the senior marketing director. This position can have a salary of up to $80,000 per year plus benefits and bonuses.
