Mathematician

A mathematician is a person who uses mathematical theory, algorithms, computer technology, and computational techniques for solving scientific, economic, business, and engineering problems. Mathematics is broken down into 2 main classes which is the ‘pure’ (theoretical) mathematics and the ‘applied’ mathematics.

Applied mathematics will be used by a mathematician who works in industrial research to solve problems and enhance mathematical methods for solving the hard problems. Some mathematicians are sometimes referred to as ‘cryptanalysts’. They use their skills in math for deciphering encryption systems or codes that are designed for transmitting political, military, law enforcement related, or financial information.

Some work as collaborators at various institutions. When a mathematician works in academia they juggle both teaching and research.

Training And Education Requirements For Mathematicians

For most jobs within the private industry you will need a Ph.D. but there are some opportunities available at the masters degree level. The main range of mathematician jobs is centered around being a part of various technical teams and in research and development labs.

While a bachelors degree in the private sector is only a stepping stone, it is a different thing to work for the government. You can obtain an entry level job with the government if you have a bachelors degree and a major in mathematics. Outside of government there are only a few teaching jobs available at the primary or secondary grade levels. These require a bachelors degree and the passing of the state certification requirements.
