Security Guard Training

To the uninformed, security guard training may seem to comprise only how to wear a uniform and watch monitors. The reality is often much more involved: This can be a very dangerous profession, and not giving it the respect it deserves can potentially be deadly.

Security guards, sometimes called security officers, protect goods, property and sometimes lives against fire, theft, vandalism and terrorism. Not all positions require carrying—and possibly using—firearms, but most states do require some level of certification or license for the security guard position.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities vary according to employer and position. Requirements for employment vary as well. The type and scope of security guard training must meet employer standards as well as local, state and federal criteria that again depends on position.

Static guards maintain their position in one location, often monitoring entrances and exits as well as security cameras placed throughout property. Roaming guards patrol assigned areas, whether inside or outside buildings. Armored car security guards secure property and currency as it is transported from one location to another. Personnel security guards protect persons against abduction or harm.

The security guard training each position receives is commensurate with the threat level, firearm requirement and policing actions.

Education and Training

Overall, there are no specific education requirements for security guards. Most employers prefer that an applicant have at least a high school diploma or equivalent. However, because some positions can require questioning witnesses, detaining suspects and investigating possible crimes, having an online degree in some form of criminal investigation, psychology or a similar undergraduate program or experience is a definite plus. Gaming security guards—those in casinos and betting parlors—must possess at least an undergraduate degree.

Security guard training for positions that require carrying a sidearm is much more extensive than for those without the requirement. Employers who require the addition of a sidearm are legally responsible for any use of force.

While not every state requires a security guard to be licenses, the number of states requiring it are increasing. Sample test areas may include use of force, interrogation and arrest procedures and criminal investigation. Those with sidearms must maintain eligibility for carrying a weapon and often are retested periodically for proficiency in use and the legalities of carrying a sidearm.

Guards may also receive training on writing proper reports, testifying in court and other legal issues.

ASIS International is a worldwide organization whose paradigm is creating and maintaining standard guidelines for security guards. ASIS International is currently developing a training program and licensing program that meets or exceeds state and federal requirements for uniform licensing and certification. While not every employer requires this certification, legislation may be introduced to institute national standards and federal licensing.
