Careers in Agriculture

People have to eat. There is no way around it, it is in our DNA. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your view on it, our world allows very few of us to grow our own crops or hunt our own meat. We need people educated and dedicated to careers in agriculture to help keep our food stocks supplied.

Career Options

There are countless careers in agriculture from chemical dealers to logging specialists and from florists to food scientists. While not all specialties will require an education, most will. For those that don’t, you only stand to have better prospects and income based on your level of education. For example, as a florist, you may not see a reason to go back to college, but consider obtaining a degree in business alongside a degree in botany for example and you will go from working for someone to running your own shop.

There are a variety of careers you can specialize in, some working directly with plants, some supporting those that do, either way, you will have countless options as you enter this field. If you wish to enforce laws, you could look into becoming a forest ranger or park ranger. If you wish to work around animals, you could assist in a zoo environment.

You may be wondering how to enter this field. A lack of education and experience can make your prospects look pretty bleak, and with your current work, family and personal responsibilities it can seem impossible to go back to college. Fortunately, you have options.

Educational Requirements

Depending on which of the many careers in agriculture you want to pursue, you will need to decide on where and what type of schooling you will need. Many students have already discovered the benefits of going back to college for an online degree. Gone are the days of classroom study or slow and tedious correspondence classes. Most colleges are now offering online degree programs. With responsibilities to our families, our current careers and our personal lives, it is difficult to find room to drive to college, get to the classroom and to spend time in the library. This is where the advantage of online degree programs really comes in.

Depending on the type of school you wish to attend you will find different options available, so doing your research is an important first step. Some schools are online colleges with no physical campus, some traditional universities will offer online and classroom study as well as community colleges. With the latter two, you can chose which you prefer, or combine the two. Finding the right college to train you for careers in agriculture should be treated the same as if it were only physical study.
