Paramedic Training

Paramedic training and education
Paramedic training is completed in phases: Basic EMT, EMT Intermediate, and finally, Paramedic. Once you complete Basic EMT training and certification, you can start working so you are gaining experience and earning an income while you complete your Paramedic training. Basic EMT training includes a combination of class work and field experience in either an ambulance or emergency room. The coursework provides training in the assessment of a patient’s condition as well as management of trauma, cardiac, and respiratory emergencies. It also includes treatment techniques to deal with cardiac arrest, airway obstruction, bleeding, emergency childbirth, and other medical emergencies. Your classes will also instruct you in the proper use of common medical equipment such as backboards, splints, stretchers, oxygen delivery systems, and suction devices.
Advancing your education and training
The next step in your training is to complete an EMT Intermediate program. This may require an additional 30-350 hours of training, depending on your intended scope of practice as well as your state’s regulations. Advanced techniques for this portion of your training include advanced airways techniques, administration of certain medications and IV fluids, and much more.
The third and final step of your training is to complete a Paramedic program. This is the highest level of training in the field and offers the best salary. This advanced training includes anatomy and physiology as well as high-level medical and lifesaving skills. This program typically takes one to two years and can be taken through most community colleges, health science schools, and online degree programs.
