In general, you will be responsible for creating reports, spreadsheets, and databases. You will work closely with software programs or perform light programming in areas such as SQL to create your data structures. If a doctors office runs an advertising campaign to attract new patients, they will be able to see how effective the campaign was by monitoring the number of new patients to sign up with one of the doctors during the duration of the campaign. If it was unsuccessful, they know to change the campaign or use a new media channel.

Another key component to this job is to create reports. You may be responsible for compiling reports for a number of sources. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention require various mandatory reports on specific cases such as contagious diseases. You may also be asked to create reports for doctors performing research studies. You would have to compile their data findings in a usable format and present it to the requester in a timely fashion. This job is often a time sensitive position. On occasion, the person requesting the information will also expect for you to present your findings. You should be prepared to provide such information. You may also be asked to perform audits on data entry. Your reports and databases are only as good as the information entered. If you have a person with poor typing skills in a data entry position, you will find out very quickly with an audit.

In addition to such skills, a medical data analyst must also be familiar with medical terminology.
