Coating, Painting and Spraying Machine Setters, Operators and Tenders

Coating, painting, and spraying machine setters, operators, and tenders are responsible for using the machines that paint things people everywhere use every day: plastic, paper, wood, glassware, cloth, ceramics, rubber, copper, silver, and even oil, glaze, and varnish.

People with this job are sometimes called coater operators, industrial painters, powder coaters, press operators, and silk screen operators.

Coater operators spend their days measuring chemicals and paints and putting them in machines, setting paint viscosity and flow, reading gauges, adjusting things like conveyor speed, air pressure, circulation, and temperature, and keeping records. They also decide what kind of paint or coating to use and what machine to use depending on different factors.

People who are good at listening, communicating, monitoring for quality, reading, using equipment, and working with their hands will probably do well with this job.

Regardless of their background or experience, students can embark on a rewarding career as a coating, painting, and spraying machine setter, operator, and tender in many locations.
