Commercial Pilots

Commercial pilots get to spend their work days soaring high above the earth and traveling the globe. People with this career fly small fixed or rotary winged aircraft to move people and cargo from one place to another.

Commercial pilots are also known as captains, pilots, line pilots, charter pilots, first officers, flight operations directors, helicopter pilots, emergency medical service helicopter pilots, and check airmen.

People with this career do so much more than navigate and pilot flights. They also make sure engines, instruments, systems, and controls are working before taking off, start engines, monitor the engine and fuel of aircraft during flights, communicate with control towers, plan flights, and ensure that luggage is loaded correctly.

These pilots are usually good at communicating, troubleshooting, decision making, critical thinking, managing time, monitoring procedures, and deductive reasoning.

To land this dream job students will need an associate’s degree. An educational program will give students a foundation in subjects like transportation, math, mechanics, physics, public safety, physics, psychology, customer and personal service, geography, and law and government. Job opportunities for commercial pilots are expected to grow quickly.
