Careers as Air Traffic Controllers

Air traffic controllers work in control towers or in terminal radar approach control (TRACON) buildings to coordinate air traffic, making sure passengers arrive at their destination safely and on time by giving flight plan clearances, sequencing landings and keeping pilots updated about weather and runway conditions.

This job requires lots of concentration and the work environment is sometimes stressful. To become an air traffic controller, you must score well on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) pre-employment test, meet basic requirements and, if you don’t have experience as an air traffic controller, you must be 30 years old or younger.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts an increase in job opportunities for the industry. Before applying for a job, it is recommended to gain experience with the FAA or the Department of Defense, or get education and training, with some experience. Training is available at four-year colleges or the FAA’s Air Traffic-Collegiate Trainings Initiative (AT-CTI) program.
