Careers as Clinical Psychologists

Clinical psychologists work with clients to diagnose emotional and mental disorders and offer treatment programs.

People with this career help clients set educational, social, personal, and career goals and create plans that will help them meet those goals. They will also administer therapy and help patients cope with things like abuse, family problems, stress, and life changes.

Psychologists also keep records, write reports, analyze medical histories, do research, and evaluate treatments. The career of clinical psychologists is centered around serving people. They help people identify problems and help them find ways to solve them or suggest treatments.

Successful clinical psychologists are good listeners, communicators, writers, critical thinkers, and problem solvers.

There are several different areas of expertise within the psychology field. Health psychologists research the ways psychological attributes effect health, neuropsychologists focus on helping people cope with health problems and geropsychologists specialize in the problems elderly people have.

Psychologists in counseling psychology assist people with problems at home, in the community, or at work. People interested in treating children, could become a school psychologist and work with students, parents, and teachers.

Industrial-organizational psychologists strive to improve working environments, developmental psychologists study human development, social psychologists research how people react to their environment and forensic scientists usually act as expert witnesses in court cases.

To make it big in this field, students will need a master’s degree and maybe a Ph.D., M.D., or J.D. An educational program will teach students all about psychology, medicine, sociology, anthropology, therapy, counseling, and personal service. Employment opportunities for clinical psychologists are expected to increase.

Regardless of their background or experience, students can embark on a rewarding career as a clinical psychologist in many locations.
