Careers as Correctional Officers and Jailers

Correctional officers and jailers have the important job of guarding inmates in rehabilitative or penal institutions. Sometimes people with this career guard prisoners as they are transported between jails, prisons, courtrooms, and other locations.

Sometimes people with this job have a title like detention officer, deputy jailer, booking officer, correctional sergeant, detention deputy, correctional sergeant, or public safety officer.

Duties of correctional officers and jailers include guarding facilities, screening visitors, booking individuals into prison, recording information about prisoners, keeping daily logs, inspecting facilities, monitoring prisoners, and inspecting inmates’ mail.

People who do well in this career are usually good critical thinkers, communicators, listeners, monitors, decision makers, reasoners, organizers, and readers.

Most correctional officers and jailers have an associate’s degree. An educational program will immerse students in subjects like computers, electronics, psychology, public safety and security, customer and personal service, administration and management, and law and government. Job opportunities for people with this career are expected to increase.
