Careers as Costume Attendants

Are you a theater guru? Maybe you dream of being a part of Broadway productions but aren’t interested in actually being on the stage. If so, you would probably love a job as a costume attendant.

Costume attendants decide what costumes cast members and entertainers wear and tailor and maintain wardrobes. People with this job are sometimes known as dressers, costume designers, costume seamstresses or cutters, costume drapers, wardrobe attendants and costumers.

As a costume attendant you will be behind all the magic that happens on the stage. From designing and creating to distributing them among cast members and helping entertainers with their costumes during shows, you will do all things costume related. You will even get to decide what Juliet wears for her famous balcony scene and help the latest rock star prepare his outfits for his upcoming tour.

Costume attendants are also responsible for renting, buying and acquiring wardrobe pieces, stocking inventory, arranging costumes back stage for quick access, cleaning and maintaining wardrobes and so much more.

People who are successful with this job are usually good critical thinkers, listeners, communicators, problem solvers and managers. They are also good with their hands and able to use them to manipulate parts.

Job opportunities for costume attendants are expected to increase quickly. The average hourly wage for people with this career is about $12 and the average annual income is about $26,000. Be sure to check out the programs being offered in many locations and start preparing for your new career!
