Family and General Practitioners have the responsibility of being the first doctor to see and treat a patient, a doctor must be able to discern when a patient needs to be referred to a specialist, and the records the doctor has on file could be essential in treating the patient.

Family and General Practitioners differ from other doctors since they have a regular and long term patient base. These doctors perform physicals and check-ups as well as treating illness and disease. This regular clientele allows these doctors regular working hours, something few other medical specialties allow.

Family and General Practitioners require a medical degree from an accredited school. Entrance to a medical school typically requires completing a bachelor’s degree, often in sciences, health, and other similar degrees.
