Forensic Psychology Major

Is a forensic psychology major right for you? Not everyone is cut out for this degree program, and it is best to figure out if you are soon because this degree program can take a long time to get through. Rather than sacrificing close to a decade of time in an educational program you don’t actually want to be in, you need to figure out if forensic psychology is right for you. Some people have certain qualities about them that make them fit for forensic psychology. Others are best left to other career fields. Here is a look at some of the character traits you need to have if you want to work in forensic psychology.

Analytical Skills

As with any psychology program, you will need to have strong analytical skills if you want to be a forensic psychology major. Forensic psychologists have to have a clear understanding of human behavior, and they have to make large assumptions based on small movements and comments. Some of these analytical skills can come from training, but many of them need to come from within. If you lack all forms of analytical skills, you may want to think about a different college major to follow.

Legal Interest

Forensic psychology is the branch of psychology most heavily involved with the criminal justice system. Thus you will need to have a clear understanding of the law and the judicial system in order to succeed as a forensic psychology major. You don’t necessarily have to enjoy learning about the law, but you at least need to show a general interest in it. Otherwise you will not be able to handle a lot of the legal aspects of forensic psychology. You may be better off with a general psychology degree at that point.

Multi-Tasking Skills

You will most likely have to handle several cases and patients at once when you begin work as a forensic psychologist. This isn’t a standard 9-5 job where you know exactly what you are going to do every day you go to work. Your job duties will change with every job you do, and that will cause you to have to multi-task. Some people enjoy this aspect of their job because it gives them knew projects to work no at all times. Others find it to be stressful and overwhelming. If you are liable to burn out in this career, you may want to think about something else.
