University of Phoenix

University of Phoenix founder, John Sperling, once said that, “Working adult students were often invisible on traditional campuses and treated as second-class citizens.” As a result, the first session of class, for what would one day become the biggest for-profit university in the North America, was held. There were only 8 students.

From 1976 until 1989, courses were only accessible at the school’s two campuses in Phoenix, Arizona and San Jose, California. By 1989, the school was ready to release its online courses and online degree programs. Over the next 20 years, the University of Phoenix would reach a peak overall enrollment of 600,000 in 2010, counting students in both online and campus-based courses.

The school is divided into two main divisions: the more than 200 physical campus locations and the eCampus. Physical campuses are spread across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, while online students are located in nearly every country of the world. Students come to the University of Phoenix to receive an education that is relevant to their lives and to the world around them.

Mission of the University of Phoenix

The four main points of the University of Phoenix philosophy on education involve providing: 1) Accessibility to Higher Education, 2)Flexible Scheduling, 3) Practitioner Faculty, and 4) Centralized Curriculum Design. In essence, they want to fulfill the needs of working and underserved students by giving them the opportunity to earn a college degree. The University of Phoenix learning goals are designed to guide students towards getting a great understanding of their area of study by teaching them skills in critical thinking and problem solving, communication, information utilization, and collaboration.

Courses at the University of Phoenix will always offer relevant curriculum and experienced faculty who actually work in the fields they teach. Students will pass through an educational experience that blends academic theory with real-world, practical application. As of March 2010, over 538,000 people had earned degrees through the University of Phoenix since its humble beginnings in 1976.

University of Phoenix Admissions Process

The University of Phoenix has an open enrollment. This means that the only requirement for admission is to have a high school diploma or GED. For students who have taken college courses at another institution, their credits will be able to transfer. And for those who haven’t transferred credits, or who have had work experience rather than a GED, they have the option of taking a Prior Learning Assessment(PLA) exam. Passing the exam will earn you credit in various courses without having to complete the coursework. The admissions process is the same for both campus-based degree programs and online degree programs.
