Dental assistants aid dentists and dental hygienists as they prepare patients for examination. Their work can include clerical tasks, record keeping, operating X-Ray machines, taking impressions of the the patients’ teeth, and sterilizing instruments. In many locations dental assisting programs will train students to do all this and more.

Many people with many Diplomas in dental assisting go on to other careers within the dental field and use the position as a stepping stone. Dental assistants enjoy great hours, with weekends and holidays off and plenty of paid vacation time.

A testament to the job satisfaction in dental assisting is the fact that most assistants stay with the same employer for an average of nine years and stay in the dental assisting profession for an average of 16 years, according to the CDA Association.
